History

The Portadam cofferdam system was developed in 1974 through a grant from the British Government. The purpose was to develop an environmentally friendly system that could be installed and removed quickly and efficiently to repair the aging canals and waterways in an environmentally friendly condition. Leigh Flexible Structures (LFS) purchased the technology and transferred assets to their Canadian division to serve the North American market. In 1981, upon receipt of an order in the United States, LFS retained Walker Diving to install and remove the first system in North America. From 1981 to 1984, Walker Diving became the exclusive system installer for LFS’s Canadian division. In 1984, the owners of Walker Diving purchased the assets from LFS and operated the Portadam as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the family’s businesses. In 2004, Finger Lakes Capital Partners purchased the assets, investing in the Company to expand its operations into the Southeast, Southwest, West Coast and Mid-west. More recently, Portadam began the development of its Above Ground Impoundment system and applied for a patent on this unique system technology and design.
